2020 WORKSHOP PROJECT

Tie-Dyed Needlework Portfolio

This year’s project is a portfolio style zippered ‘pouch.’ We envision the portfolio will be used for needlework and sewing projects. The portfolio will be made of wool that you – design and dye – using men’s silk ties. In addition to the main project you will also make a needle keeper. The keeper is a wool bird you will embellish and nest inside the portfolio. Also, since every zipper needs a cool zipper pull, we will certainly create one in class.

Last year we had a great time making a journal cover out of our organically dyed wool. This year we will again be dyeing. You will create a beautiful piece of hand dyed wool using men’s silk ties. The silk ties will be taken apart and then used in the dyeing process to transfer their color and design onto wool fabric. This dyeing technique results in a finished fabric that resembles a sort of patchwork design. You will be required to bring three silk ties to the workshop and they must be labeled 100% silk. All colors and patterns work but the more wild ties make for interesting dyeing.

After creating the tie-dyed wool it will be used in the construction of the project. The portfolio is a zippered ‘pouch’ measuring 10 ¾” x 14.” For visual appeal – the outside of the portfolio will be made of the dyed wool. For strength and durability, and to offer some structure – the inside will be lined with a webbed plastic pouch. We will provide the zippered webbed pouch that will be used as the lining. The pouch will slip inside the outside wool cover and the two will be hand stitched together.

In class you will also embellish the portfolio. With the addition of your choice of embellishing techniques including : embroidery, appliqué, texturizing, needle felting, and textile manipulation your portfolio will be a work of art.

OPTIONAL PURCHASES

CONTENTED BIRD NESTED IN A TIN POT PIN CUSHION :  We once went on a tour through the fabulous home of a woman who was a lover of needle arts. Her favorite thing was to make pin cushions of all themes and styles. On a long farm table she had an enormous old wooden bowl and in the antique bowl rested a mountain of pin cushions. It was wonderfully – visually – superb – and this display led to our certain knowledge that one can never have too many cushions.
This pin cushion design starts with a red tin base that is in the shape of a flower pot this is meant to be a nest for the bird. We wanted to be able to store bits in the tin pot so our bird cushion is basically designed to be a ‘lid.’ The fabric bird is rather plump and sits on a small cushion. The contended bird will be embellished with embroidery work using a beautifully colored yarn that traditionally is used to knit socks.
The kit includes : a red tin pot, a pre-stitched bird, stuffing, sock yarn, instructions, patterns and maybe some other bits.

                                                                                                                        Cost : $24

POTTERY FLOWER POT & BIRD STICK : Each year we offer a piece of pottery fashioned by a talented Tipp City local know as – the other Sally. This year we are offering a flower pot glazed in an ocean blue color. This piece would look perfect in your kitchen window sill filled with a little rosemary or basil. A small bird on the end of a pottery stick adds a bit of whimsy when inserted in the soil.

                                                                                                                         Cost : $18
